Finland Hosts Its First Beach SAMBO Festival

Finland's first Beach SAMBO festival took place on August 30 at Aurinkolahti Beach in Helsinki. The event was organized by Sambo-2000 Ry to promote Beach SAMBO in the country and showcase the discipline's potential as an accessible, dynamic form of SAMBO for a wide audience.

The day featured several segments: an official opening ceremony, a presentation introducing Beach SAMBO to spectators, demonstration performances, family competitions and sports entertainment activities, and a Beach SAMBO tournament that closed with a medal and diploma ceremony.

Organizers placed particular emphasis on inclusivity and family participation, designing the event to engage people of all ages and physical abilities. As part of the festival, visually impaired sambists gave a Beach SAMBO demonstration, showing spectators that SAMBO is accessible to athletes with visual impairments as well.

Thirty-six athletes aged 4 to 39 competed in the Beach SAMBO tournament, while around 50 more people took part in family competitions and other activities held alongside it. According to the organizers, this range – from young first-timers to adult athletes – clearly showed the broad appeal of Beach SAMBO.

The festival brought together several goals at once: sporting competition, an introduction to SAMBO for newcomers, and a family program that turned spectators into active participants.

“We wanted to show that Beach SAMBO is an open, accessible format that anyone can join, regardless of age or experience,” said representatives of Sambo-2000 Ry.

Organizers see the first festival as a starting point for the discipline's further development in Finland. Plans include growing the number of participants, expanding the children's and family program, and promoting inclusive formats, including Beach SAMBO, at future events.
